Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about working with Melody Advisory.

Operational consulting is the practice of helping organizations fix the processes, systems, and controls that determine how work actually gets done.
Where strategy consulting focuses on what an organization should do, operational consulting focuses on how it actually does it, including includes financial operations, workflow design, system implementation, internal controls, compliance, and data management.
When those things work well, organizations run smoothly. When they don't, everything feels harder than it should.
-
You’re ready to hire a consultant when you realize that "trying harder" isn't fixing the problem. Usually, this happens when your team is talented and working at capacity, but the output is still late, unreliable, or disorganized.
If your operations feel like a bottleneck to your growth rather than a foundation for it, it’s time for an outside perspective to untangle the knots.
-
Maybe. If you have the right people, the bandwidth, and the expertise, internal fixes can work. But most organizations come to us after they've already tried.
The challenge is that the people closest to the problem are often also responsible for keeping operations running day to day. It's hard to redesign the plane while flying it. That's where an outside perspective makes the difference.

We typically partner with organizations experiencing transition, growth, complexity, or those that lack clarity in their financials or operations. Our clients include companies that have outgrown their “scrappy” processes, those dealing with leadership turnover, and those navigating a merger or acquisition. Our clients are often growth-stage companies, nonprofits, and small to mid-size businesses.
-
We work across industries, but we have deep experience with nonprofits and growth-stage technology companies. What matters more than industry is the type of problem. If your organization is dealing with broken processes, weak controls, disjointed systems, or operational chaos, we can help regardless of what sector you're in.
-
Yes. Nonprofits are one of our core client groups. We understand the unique operational and compliance challenges that nonprofits face, including grant compliance, fund accounting, audit readiness, and the pressure to do more with lean teams and limited budgets. We design solutions that are practical, right-sized, and built for how nonprofits actually operate.
-
Yes. While Melody Advisory is based in New York, we work with organizations across the country. Most engagements can be conducted remotely, and we travel when the work calls for it.
-
We implement and make sure it sticks. Unlike consultants who hand over a deck of recommendations and disappear, we stay through the work. Jennie acts as a strategic architect who isn't afraid to pick up a hammer, handling everything from high-level process design to the hands-on details of getting it done.
That means working alongside your team, not outside them, until the solution is actually in place and working. The goal isn't a report, it’s a result.
-
You work with Jennie directly. One of the core values of Melody Advisory is "senior-level expertise throughout." We don't believe in the bait and switch model where a senior partner sells the work and a junior associate executes it. You get the full benefit of Jennie's experience from the first call to the final deliverable.

Engagements are tailored to the complexity of the problem, but they generally follow a three-phase approach:
Discovery (identifying the root cause of the friction)
Design (building a custom roadmap)
Implementation (executing the fix)
The goal of our engagements is always the same: solutions that actually work and hold up after we're gone.
-
It depends on the complexity of the problem. A focused engagement to address a specific issue might take a few weeks, while a larger operational overhaul or system implementation could take several months. We scope every engagement based on what the problem actually requires, not a predetermined timeline.

A fractional CFO provides part-time senior financial leadership, typically focused on financial strategy, reporting, and investor relations. An operational consultant like Melody Advisory focuses on fixing the underlying processes, systems, and controls that a CFO relies on to do their job. The two are complementary. In fact, we often work alongside fractional CFOs to build the operational infrastructure they need to lead effectively.

Pricing is based on the scope, complexity, and duration of the engagement. Every organization’s situation is different. After an initial consultation to understand your specific needs, we provide a transparent, custom proposal. There are no surprise fees, and the pricing will be structured in a way that fits your situation.
-
We do the heavy lifting, but a successful engagement requires a few things from your side. Most importantly, we need leadership buy-in and a genuine willingness to change the way things are currently being done. We also need a designated point of contact, timely access to relevant data, systems, and people, and your team's insights to make sure the solutions fit your organization’s culture and way of operating. The organizations that get the most out of working with us are the ones that come to us ready to fix the problem.
-
Your only commitment is to the engagement itself. We are platform-agnostic, meaning we don't receive kickbacks from software vendors or third parties. If we recommend a tool or a vendor, it is solely because it is the best fit for your specific needs, not because we are stuck in a partnership.
In fact, our first line of attack is to maximize what you already have. Many organizational problems are caused by underutilized tools, not a lack of them. We only recommend new software if your current tech stack is fundamentally incapable of supporting your goals or is creating significant compliance risk.
-
With the utmost rigor. Given our focus on finance and risk, we treat data security as a non-negotiable priority. We operate under strict confidentiality agreements and ensure that every process we build or system we touch adheres to your industry’s specific regulatory and internal control requirements.

Getting started is simple. Schedule a free 30-minute consultation and we'll have a real conversation about what's going on in your organization. We'll discuss the challenges you're facing and figure out if there's a fit. If there is, we'll put together a transparent proposal outlining the scope and approach. Once we're aligned, we get to work.
