AI’s Impact on Finance
We have all seen the articles about AI eliminating finance jobs. I am here to say, please don't panic because it's not as simple a switch as it sounds.
First, AI is not ready yet to replace the judgment calls that make up most finance work. It may be ready someday, but not today.
Second, and most importantly, even if it were ready, it's only as good as the processes and data underneath it. Adding AI on top of garbage doesn't clean it up. It just moves the garbage faster.
Honorable mention, the worldview driving these posts is very tech-centric. Outside of tech, many of the companies I work with are still trying to get their data clean enough for Excel.
The "AI did it" layoff narrative is convenient. Boards and investors want a story. AI is today's story. Last year it was something else. The people getting laid off are real. The explanation is often spin.
The sky isn't falling right now. The hype machine is just very, very loud.
